Building Custom Pantries

A Pantry Fit for a Turtle

My pantry was a complete disaster. One falling pile of disorganized mess at a time, I knew it was time for a serious overhaul. And boy, am I glad I did it! This custom DIY pantry project has been a total game-changer for our household.

You see, before we started this renovation, our kitchen was in a constant state of disarray. Where did I put the cutting board now? If I have to tell you one more time, the green bowl goes inside the other bowls! And don't even get me started on the classic "Why did you buy more salad dressing? We already have 14 bottles in the pantry if somebody would just keep them all in one spot!" It was a wreck, plain and simple.

When we first moved in, the pantry wasn't a priority. We just shoved in a couple of plastic shelving units and called it a day. Except it wasn't good enough - not by a long shot. I was feeling frustrated on the regular, and I knew we needed a complete kitchen storage overhaul. A simple reorganization just wouldn't do.

So, one weekend, we decided to tackle the beast. We emptied the entire pantry cabinet, removed the plastic shelves, and started from scratch. After a quick trip to Lowe's and less than $100 in supplies, we got to work transforming this space into a custom pantry fit for a turtle (that's me, by the way).

Designing the Perfect Pantry

Before we started nailing anything permanent into place, we took some time to think about what kind of kitchen storage we really needed. A few key considerations:

  • Shelf Height: Since we were building this from scratch, we had the flexibility to customize the shelf heights to suit our specific storage requirements.
  • Shelf Depth: Depending on the items we wanted to store, we could choose the perfect depth for each shelf.
  • Stud Placement: Using a stud finder, we marked the wall studs to ensure a secure mounting for our shelves.

With those factors in mind, we got to work. First up, we cut the 2x2 boards to line the back wall, screwing them directly into the studs using 3" cabinet screws. We also cut some 2x2 sections for the side supports.

Next, we measured and cut the 1x16 pine boards for the shelves. Luckily, the excess piece we cut off was almost the perfect fit for the side shelves - talk about a fortuitous coincidence! To give the shelves a nice, finished look, we used a router with a rounding bit to soften the front edges.

Now, the fun part: installing the shelves. Starting with the bottom shelf, we placed it on the back and side brackets and used a nail gun to secure it in place. We worked our way up, nailing each shelf into the supports as we went.

To provide some extra reinforcement, we built simple DIY wooden brackets to support the center of the longer shelves. Using 1x2 boards, we customized the measurements for each shelf, nailing them in from the top and bottom. This was an optional step, but it's been a fantastic feature for storing all sorts of larger items, from cookie sheets to platters.

The Final Reveal

When all was said and done, our pantry measured a cozy 80.5" x 31" - the perfect size to fit our needs. And let me tell you, the transformation is nothing short of amazing.

Gone are the days of disorganized chaos. Now, I get to stare at the beautiful, organized shelves and melt with satisfaction. Every single item I took out went right back in, but with so much more room to spare. It's incredible what a little organizing can do for your space.

The best part? We went from 5 shelves before to 5 shelves now, but the storage capacity has increased exponentially. I can't even describe the joy of having a designated spot for all my cookie sheets, platters, and other kitchen essentials. No more digging through piles to find that one elusive item!

And the custom touches, like the wooden brackets and rounded shelf edges, really take this pantry to the next level. It's the stuff that dreams are made of - and it's all thanks to a weekend's worth of hard work.

Lessons Learned

If there's one thing I've learned from this project, it's that a well-organized pantry can truly transform your kitchen experience. No more frantic searches, no more frustrating exclamations about where things are - just seamless storage and easy access to all my culinary essentials.

But beyond the practical benefits, this DIY pantry project has also brought a sense of harmony and unity back into our home. No more bickering about whose turn it is to tidy up the mess; now, everyone knows where everything goes, and there's a place for everything.

So, if you're feeling frustrated with your own kitchen storage woes, I highly recommend tackling a custom pantry project like this one. It may seem daunting at first, but trust me, the effort is well worth it. With a little planning, some elbow grease, and a dash of creativity, you can turn your pantry into a space that not only looks amazing but also makes your life so much easier.

And if you need a little inspiration, just take a look at how far we've come. From a disorganized disaster to a pantry fit for a turtle - I couldn't be happier with the results. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go stare at my beautiful new pantry some more. It's the perfect way to spend a turtle's afternoon.
